Midway between North and South, Abruzzo is anything but middling.
From sea to mountaintop, Abruzzo actually has no official plains.
 Immediate transitions between the beaches of the Adriatic and a sprinkling of fields to the woods and rocky escarpments leading to the snow-capped Gran Sasso d'Italia and the Majella. In addition, 30% of the territory is ruled by environmental protection laws, a figure unevened in all of Europe.
Contrasts are not limited to geography. Ancient and modern, artistic and historical treasures blend with major engineering and architectural works - cathedrals, castles and aqueducts - framed by a finely carved natural environment.
