The Region
A small region of Southern Italy, Basilicata is sparsely populated and characterized by an untainted environment. The region has important monuments dating of both Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages.
Also, Basilicata is home to a most singular component of UNESCO's catalog of "humanity's heritage". The stones (sassi) of Matera attract the interest and curiosity of scholars and artists alike. Homes carved within these soft volcanic formations were inhabited from prehistoric times until a few decades ago (when cultural and touristic rehabilitation programs were launched).
History and culture as elegant complements to sea-side stays on the wonderful beaches of Maratea.
