The Region
 The fourth most important economic area on a global scale, according to a Japanese study, the greater Milan area. covering the northern part of the region, is rooted in history.
Milan, the second capital of the Roman Empire, subsequently leading to a never-ending rivalry with the first, gradually developped its commercial and industrial importance. Ressources allowed for were invested in cultural and architectural works. Witness the variety of styles encountered: Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance or Baroque.
The geography, naturally contained in the plains, changes radically to the north. Prealpine zones such as Bergamo, Varese or Como quickly yield to true mountainous terrain with great lakes, valleys and sporting resorts where food, wine, natural beauty and cultural heritage combine to create priceless outings.
