The fourth most important economic area on a global scale, according to a Japanese study, the greater Milan area. covering the northern part of the region, is rooted in history.

Milan, the second capital of the Roman Empire, subsequently leading to a never-ending rivalry with the first, gradually developped its commercial and industrial importance.
