Experienced travellers feel shortchanged in Athens if beforehand they have been to Solunte, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento or Selinunte - where they attempted to build the largest temple of all Greek cities. But there is more heritage: many outside influences remain, as evidenced by the variety of architectural styles. Even the works of art straddle various cultures simultaneously in a spirit of harmony: the frescoes of the Cathedral in Monreale depict scenes of Christian, Judaic and Muslim faiths side-by-side!
The land is parched by the sun but still yields many gastronomical specialites of surprising refinement and variety. Experiencing volcanic activity at the Etna or the Eolian islands are self-standing excursions. And naturally, the sea offers its catalog of memorable aesthetic wonders.
