From Sea to Shining Sea

An itinerary for those who appreciate the sea. Or should we say the seas... and the fields that landscape a narrow band of land, alternating between soft and rugged, that seperate the Ionian and Tyrrhenian.
Soverato

Any seaside resort starting point (each having its historical village inland - Squillace and its Lido, S. Andrea and Marina di S. Andrea) provides images of dunes anchored by Mediterranean macchia and long sandy beaches that slowly slip into the Ionian. Moving inland towards Chiaravalle Centrale, the panorama confirms the softness of the eastern slope of the Serre region.
Serra San Bruno South of this agricultural burg is the XIth century monastery founded by Brunone di Colonia; of note among this complex of wall-ringed buildings are the chapel of San Brunone and the museum. The road then starts winding around S. Nicola da Crisse and towards agricultural lands and citrus groves which announce the imminence of the seashore.
Vibo Valentia The pre-Christian ruins of Hipponion, Locrian colony, appropriately introduce this city with deep historical roots. Byzantine occupation, destruction at the hands of the Saracenes and finally rebuilt under Frederick II, it features a castle built upon a norman tower that offers its guests a unique view on the land and its Tyrrhenian sea.
Tropea The famous resort's historical core offers a wonderful cathedral partially restored to its original XVth century appearance and the Palazzo Vescovile with XIVth century frescoes. The narrow roads lead to the belvedere overlooking the promontory's natural carvings.
Capo Vaticano

The pristine wilderness of the promontory at Capo Vaticano introduces the Gulf of Gioia. The memorable images are even greater during a summer sunset blazing over the Eolian islands breaking the horizon.
