The Appian Way

From the Garigliano river, at the northernmost point of Campania, to Benevento, we follow the land-based link between the heart of the Roman Empire and the territories conquered in the south and the ports on the Adriatic and the Ionian seas.
Minturnae Miunturno is of pre-roman origins; it was many times levelled, byt the Romans, Longobards and Saracenes. Of Imperial times, many structures remain: protective walls, temples, a forum, an Antiquarium and a theater. The medieval town is centered around the typical via Supportico. Other monuments of interest include the Cathedral of S. Pietro (XIth century) and the castle in the heart of the foritifed town.
Sessa Aurunca The Aurunci people established their capital at the base of the Roccamonfina dormant volcano. From Roman times, only a theater remains, whereas the Middle Ages have bequeathed a castle and an elegant cathedral visibly decorated with elements removed from Roman munuments. Recently open to the public are the catacoombs of San Casto dating back to the IVth century B.C.35
Capua Capua is home to the marvellous Museo Campano with important works of Greek and Roman epochs. Aside from an extensive epigraphic collection, the 'Mothers', a collection of soft-stone sculptures dedicated to fertility, is worthy of note.

At a short distance we reach S. Maria Capua Vetere, the location of the ancient Capua, in Etruscan, Sannite and Roman times. The amphitheater and its complex of underground passageways is impressive: the structure was second only to the Colliseum, having 4 stories and reaching 40 meters in height. Worthy of mention is the Duomo, rebuilt on more tha one occasion, but having maintained its original columns inside the structure.
Benevento A town of Sannite origins, it was also a capital of a Lungobard Duchy. The Arc of Traiao and the Adiraneo theater, whose capacity vastly surpasses that of many contemporary structures, are of Roman origin. Of the Middle Ages we can visit the Duomo, the splendid church of S. Sofia and the Rocca dei Rettori. Archeological finds and works from the MIddle Ages are exposed at the Museo del Sannio in the Monastery of the benedictine nuns.
