The Appian Way

The link between Rome and the Empire's territories to the south was materialized by the via Appia. By following this path, we will envounter testimonials of Roman presence and discover heritage from the Middle Ages, often erected over Imperial monuments.
At Rome's Doorstep Originally, the via Appia initiated a the curve of the Circus Maximus, in the heart of Rome. The modern day start is at S. Sebastiano gate. The initial road is bordered by Imperial structures, such as the Villa and Circus of Massenzio as well as varous mortuary monuments. Further we reach Castel Gandolfo (see the Roman villas itineray) going towards Velletri.
Ninfa A brief detour in teh vicinity of Latina will lead us to a natural oasis encompassing a medieval town abandoned since centuries, Ninfa, which is open to the public on predefined dates . The medieval burg of Norma also has Imperial remains : a number of temples and two acropolis. We also suggest a visit to the well-preserved Caetani castle (XIIIth century)in nearby Sermoneta.

Before reaching Terracina, the notable Abbey of Fossanova, the first such cistercian structure of Italy, is a mere 15 km from the via Appia.
Terracina Of probable spartan origin, this town has remains of the temple of Jupiter Anxur and the Capitolino temple. The roman forum was transformed into the town's main piazza in front of the Duomo (XIth century), itself erected over an Imperial temple. Noteworthy is the Frangipane castle.
Fondi Of this important Roman centre, only portions of the protective walls remain, whereas the Duomo, built over an ancient temple, the Palazzo dei Principi and the castle are witnesses of the Middle Ages.
Formia A holiday destination for Romans, its theater and the tomb of Cicero are the remaining legacies. The valuable archeological pieces are exposed in Antiquarium. Close by, in Gaeta, the castle is an interesting structure. Having had constant additions and restructurings, it has evolved into a two, upper and lower, structures.
